ESG is a way to organize environmental, social and governance information that can affect an organization, its stakeholders and its ability to create value.

Environmental

Energy, emissions, water, pollution, resources, ecosystems and exposure to physical climate hazards.

Social

Workers, customers, communities, human rights, safety, inclusion and access.

Governance

Decision rights, ethics, controls, board oversight, incentives, risk management and transparency.

The useful question is not “Do we have ESG?” It is: which sustainability-related issue can change this decision, who is accountable, and what reliable evidence is needed?

For a small business, the starting point may be customer requirements, electricity use, worker safety and financing. For a bank, it may be borrower risk, portfolio exposure and product governance. Material issues differ by context.
